Scooby-Doo Phonics Box Set - Frances Ann Ladd

Scooby-Doo Phonics Box Set - Frances Ann Ladd

Reading Level: Ages 4-8
Pages: 240
ISBN-13: 978-0439664783
Copyright: 2005
My rating: 4/5

Synopsis: "Based on the best research on how children develop reading skills, these twelve books introduce a carefully selected progression of letter sounds-starting with the easiest and most common. Each book helps build a young reader's confidence with repeated examples of the letter sounds being focused on, as well as "words to learn" and "words to sound out."

I was well satisfied with the teaching element of this 12 book set. Each booklet had a brief set of "new" words and sounds you should look for in the story before you began reading and this was really helpful with my 5 year old who has a slight speech problem. We would say the words together several times and then begin our story and that made her more familiar with them and when we came upon them in the story we would stop and place emphasis thus making her feel even more comfortable using words she may not have before.

The pages are full of beautiful color pictures and the words are in large sized print which allowed for only having one to two sentences on each page making it easier to hold her attention. I was overjoyed when she took a book from my hand and attempted to read the story aloud all on her own!

The biggest dissappointment to us overall had nothing to do with the learning ability of the phonics books as the omittance of the rest of the Scooby Doo Gang.

Redneck Cinderella - LuAnn McLane

Genre: Chick Lit

Series/Standalone: Standalone
Pages: 286
Copyright: 2009
My Rating: 4/5

Synopsis: "Raised by her widowed father, Jolie Russell could keep up with any man until wealthy and sexy land developer Cody Dean struts into her life. Cody buys the Russell farm with an impossible-to-refuse multimillion-dollar offer, then relocates Jolie and her dad to the Copper Creek Estates. But the country club atmosphere isn’t ready for Jolie’s kind of country. As her two worlds collide, Jolie wonders how she can capture Cody’s heart without giving up her grits.

I loved this book from the first time Jolie opened her mouth! Being from "The South" myself it was a charming and refreshing read for me filled with our redneck antics and I giggled thru the entire story!

Jolie is like a breath of fresh air in this rags to riches fantasy tale trying to win her prince charming but still struggling to hang on tight to her bred in redneck roots. I found myself edging her on against all those tight lipped upper crusted snobs and wished her to smack a few of them to their senses.

A true delight for any Southern gal. You want be ready to put it down til you finish it!

James Patterson

Fangtastic Friday - October 16, 2009

Well anybody that knows me knows that I am a sucker for vampires. Umm did I just say that?  I mean literally?  lmao  OK I did but for lack of a better description right now; "I adore them" just dont cut it!

Fangtastic Fridays will be my personal pleasure for finding new "fangtastic" books to add to my Got To Read List. New doesn't neccasarily mean new to print just a new find for me. It also is not limited just to my ravenous vamps but a nice lil mixture of werewolf, witches, madness, and mayhem for extra measure!

The first token of pleasure I found was this first book to a new series that has alot of "Merit".  Pun intended because this series is all about Merit and her New Awakening.

Some Girls Bite - Chloe Neill

Synopsis: "Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker—and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.
Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude— and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood."

Next up I found this delicious tidbit.

3 Days to Dead - Kelly Meding

Synopsis: "They’ll never see her coming. . . .
When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue—in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there—her troubles are only just beginning. Before that night she and the two other members of her Triad were the city’s star bounty hunters, mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor—and she can’t even remember what it was.
Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice—and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days Evy will die again—but this time there’s no second chance. . . ."

Back to the Bedroom

Sunday's At Tiffany's - James Patterson

Genre: Fiction
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Pages: 281
Copyright: 2008
My Rating: 3/5

Synopsis: As a little girl, Jane has no one. Her mother, the powerful head of a Broadway theater company, has no time for her. She does have one friend-a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael-but only she can see him.

Years later, Jane is in her thirties and just as alone as ever. Then she meets Michael again-as handsome, smart and perfect as she remembers him to be. But not even Michael knows the reason they've really been reunited.

I read this book in just a few hours. It was a quick and fun read that held my attention all the way thru. I had never given much thought to an imaginary friend coming to life but the story gives it alot of merit and seriously makes you sit back and ponder would it not be splendid if they could?

Although I enjoyed the story and the fantasy I felt the book was far to predictable and left very little to the imagination other than the fantasy idea of your imaginary friends coming to life.
